French route Stage 3: From Zubiri to Pamplona (20 km.)

The route does not enter the centre of Zubiri and instead begins at its medieval bridge, along a concrete track towards the cemetery. . Here, take a path that goes down between hedges and crosses the Ibesiko Erreka stream and goes up a stony slope first and a clear path afterwards. When you reach the Idoietako Erreka stream you have to cross a humped Japanese-style footbridge with a handrail. 200 m later, join the road to Osteriz and follow it for 500 m. Then take a track that crosses the Magna industrial facility. Follow this path, which leads up to the hamlet of Ilarratz.

Ezkirotz, passing the chapel of Santa Lucia and its small cemetery. In Ezkirotz a path alongside a fountain heads off between great oaks and leads to some livestock sheds, where the path turns into a track. After a short while, cross the road to Setoáin in order to take the path, surrounded firstly by large fields and later by fences, which will take you to the medieval bridge at Larrasoaña.

From the bridge along the left bank of the river Arga, a small road leads up towards Akerreta. In the village, take a path adorned with fences and follow it across another road that leads to the village. The track enters a grove of European black pine and goes down along a stony section to the banks of the river Arga.

The narrow but pleasant path takes you to the village of Zuriain, where you arrive after crossing the river via a bridge. Cross the village and leave along the main road, walking very carefully along the verge and you will come to the crossroads at Ilurdotz, the turnoff which you must follow. After crossing the bridge over the Arga, a track between the houses leads to the ruins of an old quarry. From here a path halfway up the hillside, with good views onto the river, takes us to the centre of Irotz. The route continues along a concrete track that heads down to the river, crosses it via a bridge and ends up in a recreational area that is part of the Parque Fluvial de la Comarca de Pamplona (Pamplona Area River Park).

The route follows a narrow path located between the N-135 and the paved route of the Arga River Park, until it reaches the first houses of the lower neighbourhood of Zabaldika. Before crossing the lower neighbourhood of Zabaldika completely, there is a signpost with directions towards the paved route of the Arga River Park. The route conitinues up to the Zabaldika recreational area via an underground walkway, avoiding having to cross the N-135. Following the paved track of the river park, you reach Zabaldika. The itinerary leads through the lower part of Zabaldika and along a path that comes out onto the road. Another recreational area can be seen 200m ahead; you get there by crossing the road. A narrow marked-out pathway keeps to the vertical embankment with its protective fencing and you soon reach the Arleta farm. Along open land you reach a low ridge where ruins of the abandoned village of Santiagozar still remain.

Cross the Ronda Este (the ring road around Pamplona) through an underground walkway and then, along on a track that runs parallel to this road, you skirt mount Miravalles. From the highest point, a small road heads downwards towards the chapel of Trinidad de Arre, where you arrive after crossing the Ultzama River. The route continues along the main street of Villava, carries on via Burlada until it crosses the N-121 and continues along a tree-lined pathway (initially) and then along the edge of a narrow road until it reaches the Magdalena Bridge – the gateway to Pamplona.
